Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate launched

As I’ve traveled around the world this year, I’ve heard loud and clear from healthcare professionals how much need there is for a thoughtful but practical educational resource on AI, made specifically for healthcare. Today, we’re announcing the Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate, a new program designed to teach responsible, practical ways to use AI in day-to-day work. Built to fit busy schedules, the program offers flexible, self-paced lessons that focus on non-clinical administrative tasks. It is designed to be completed in less than five hours and to keep patients’ safety and privacy front and center.

Having spent my career in medicine, I know that people in healthcare are driven by a shared purpose to care for others, support families, and make a meaningful difference in their communities. Technology offers a real opportunity to support that purpose. Across disciplines, care teams are navigating how AI can shoulder administrative tasks and create more time for what matters most: patients.

Reclaiming that time has never been more urgent. A National Nursing Workforce Survey found that nearly one in three registered nurses planned to leave or retire due to unsustainable workloads. Emerging technologies are poised to ease these pressures, but nine out of 10 doctors say they want dedicated training in how to use AI effectively. Regardless of your role in healthcare, navigating AI tools shouldn’t be something you have to figure out on your own. The Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate offers an opportunity to build these skills, while earning up to 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Healthcare organizations are already putting the training into practice. NYU Grossman School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Touro University are offering it to their faculty, residents, and medical students. Additionally, leading nursing institutions, including Purdue University School of Nursing, are offering the certificate as part of their healthcare professional training.

Clinical and medical education professionals who reviewed the curriculum also emphasize the importance of practical AI literacy.
